Recognising the need for high standards, we have employed a unique approach to evaluate candidates' analytical abilities. By posing seemingly impossible questions like "How many golf balls are there in the UK?" or "How many maternity beds do we need in the UK?" during our recruitment process, we employ a technique called Fermi estimation.

The term "Fermi estimation" pays homage to the physicist Enrico Fermi, who used this method to tackle complex problems through crude but effective estimations. The process involves breaking down an insurmountable problem into a series of independent, back-of-the-envelope calculations. Although these individual estimations may not be precise, they tend to cancel out errors, leading to reasonably accurate estimates.

The Value of Fermi Estimation in Data Analysis

In today's data-driven landscape, the ability to validate results is often undervalued. Data analysts sometimes produce outputs without thoroughly examining their accuracy, leading to questionable conclusions. The phrase, "well the code runs ok," becomes a hollow justification for overlooking the importance of sense-checking outputs.

Fermi estimation bridges this gap by encouraging data analysts to question their results. It urges them to go beyond the numbers and apply common sense to assess whether the outcomes align with the real-world context. For instance, when analysing total revenue, a competent data analyst will consider the total number of customers, transactions, and year-on-year comparisons. This critical assessment is vital in ensuring the credibility of the analysis.

Unveiling the Power of Fermi Estimation with an Example

Let's delve into a practical scenario where Fermi estimation proves its mettle. Imagine a data analyst examining the number of specific products in a shopping basket. Of particular interest is the average number of wallets in each basket (assuming there is at least one wallet present). The analysis yields a figure of 1.8 wallets per basket. At first glance, this number seems plausible, but upon closer inspection, doubts arise. Who buys 1.8 wallets on average? Surely, the figure should be closer to 1.1 or so, accounting for people who buy spares or match them with outfits.

Relying on intuition and number sense, the data analyst challenges the result and investigates further. Ultimately, the correct figure emerges: 1.05 wallets per basket. The error was buried deep within duplicated data from the data warehouse. The discovery reaffirms the significance of Fermi estimation – the process of questioning results and validating assumptions.
